MODE OF ACTION OF MONOGLYCERIDES OF SCFA

Monoglycerides of SCFA showed in many cases to have a much higher antibacterial effect compared to the free fatty acids. Their specific mode of action may fit into several possible mechanisms/explanations.

1-     Monoglycerides of SCFA have an antibacterial effect because their esters possess non-specific activity of surface active agents (surfactants). Studies have demonstrated that the antibacterial and anti-fungal activities of these esters were due to their functions in disrupting cell membrane (Nihei et al., 2004)

2-     The glycerol moiety as a hydrophilic carrier that transfer the fatty acids through the cell membrane, where it exhibits its antibacterial activity (Ruzin et al., 2000). Antogiovanni et al.,2011 stated that 1-aminobutyric when added to the feed, caused a reduction of zero colony-forming units (CFUs) of Salmonella Typhimurium in the bird’s caeca.

3-     The system of glycerol transport through the inner cell membrane of gram-negative bacteria is via the aquaglyceroporins. Aquaporins and Aquaglyceroporins constitute a major family of intrinsic membrane proteins with ubiquitous presence in living organisms. Among them are glycerol up-taking facilitators (GUF) found in E-coil and other pathogenic gram-negative bacteria. In E-coil glycerol is conveyed through these GUFs. The monoglycerides of SCFA would not get through these channels and block them, leading to deprivation of glycerol supply and cell death (Kabara et al., 1972)
